“On the Terrace” is an oil on canvas measuring 48 by 36 inches. It is signed lower right and dated–”’66.”–on the recto, and signed, dated and titled on the verso.

In this composition Christiana follows his abstractionist instincts, eyeing a bottle-on-a-table through a cubist’s lens… while reflecting characteristics of mid-20th century design–the curvilinear forms of Eero Saarinen and Alexander Calder come to mind.

Christiana graduated from Pratt Institute in 1933, and studied further at School of Related Arts and Sciences (forerunner to the School of Art), Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute (Utica, NY). He served on the staff at MWPI from 1943 until the 1970s, after which time he and his wife traveled the US and Canada, painting. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts, and elsewhere. His artwork can be found in the collections at Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute of Art, Currier Gallery of Art (Manchester, NH), International Business Machines, Albany Institute of History and Art, amongst other public and private collections.
