Item Details

This group of works by Rockwell Kent and Frederick O’Brien, both travel writers, includes a June 21st, 1920 [Kent’s birthday] handwritten letter by Kent to O’Brien; a July 12th typescript response from O’Brien; and a September 20th photocopy of Kent’s followup.

In their correspondence the two authors share admiration for each other’s books, – Wilderness (Kent) and White Shadows in the South Seas (O’Brien) – and a  desire to travel to the locations that each visited – Alaska and the Marquesas Islands. They discuss exchanging inscribed books, though the ones here are not those [whereabouts unknown]. The group also includes the February 1922 issue of The Mentor, which highlights O’Brien’s travels in the South Seas. As illustrated, the group is handsomely boxed by the late Kent collector Robert Rightmire, and includes a statement by him.
