A Moose River Waterfall… by Edward Christiana (1912-1992). The watercolor on paper is signed and dated lower right, – “’78,” – annotated on the verso, and measures 18 by 24 inches.

Moose River is a waterway in north-central New York, not far from where Christiana lived and worked. Christiana taught painting at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Art Institute School of Art, beginning in the 1940s. He traveled with his wife, Connie, and family, throughout the States and Canada, to paint the land and seascapes from Maine to the Rocky Mountains.

He was inducted into the American Watercolor Society in 1949 and twice received the coveted William Church Osborne Purchase Prize. His artwork is included in the collections of Everson Museum of Art, Currier Gallery of Art, and Albany Institute of History and Art, among others.

His compositions bridge the gap between realism and abstraction, a reflection of his appreciation for the work of Winslow Homer and John Marin.
