Standish or ink stand. Appears to be made in sections of cast bronze. Probably 18th century, and probably of European origin–made for use in the American colonies.
Scratched into the base of the stand is the date “1723”–the significance of which is not precisely known. The inks are glass with bronze lids. The candle holder also serves as a cap, which when lifted exposes a small compartment.
The tray measures approximately 6 3/4 (8 3/8, with handles) x 4 1/4 inches.
