A jolly ole Benjamin Franklin-like character, in knickers, braces himself on the back of his chair. He carries a woven basket on his back. The gents body serves to hold a pipe while the basket held matches; the grooved back of the chair serves as a match striker; and a “spout” from his mouth probably held a pick, for cleaning his pipe. Silver paint once decorated the exterior of this cup or stand.
The cup measures 5 inches high by 3 1/5 inches front-to-back, and 3 3/8 inches toe-to-toe.
