Home Harbor Rocks (Maine) by Edward Christiana (1912-1992)

“The challenge of painting embodies (for me) a flexibility of approach and execution which results in a variety of pictorial concepts,” Edward Christiana wrote in 1969.

Christiana studied at Pratt Institute (Brooklyn) and School of Related Arts and Sciences (forerunner of School of Art) at Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute (MWPI. Utica, NY) during the 1930s-early 1940s. He went on to teach painting at the School of Art at MWPI, where he remained until he began his retirement in the 1970s. Some of the artists who inspired Christiana include Winslow Homer, N. C. Wyeth, J. C. Leyendecker, and John Marin, whose melding of realism with the abstract often appears in Christiana’s own compositions.

“Home Harbor Rocks” is one of numerous works that Edward Christiana rendered in and around Stonington, Maine. Christiana and his wife, Connie, spent many summers in Maine, where the artist captured the seascape in oils (such as this one) as well as watercolors. In addition to Maine compositions, the artist’s portfolio also reflects his familys’ travels throughout the U. S. and Canada.

Christiana actively exhibited in the U. S. and Canada, –this painting was displayed at Cooperstown Art Association and MWPI–and his artwork can be found in Worcester Art Museum (MA), Columbus Museum of Art (OH), Currier Gallery of Art (NH), and Albany Institute of History and Art (NY), among other museums.

This composition measures 24 by 46 inches, and framed, 30 1/4 by 52 1/4 inches.
