This full plate ambrotype (collodion positive) depicting a genteel couple is an exceptionally sharp image. The clarity of the imagery allows the viewer to see the details of the couples’ attire, as well as, the Adirondack style bench on which they sit. The author of this ambrotype is unknown, though several photographers, including Platt D. Babbitt, worked almost exclusively at various sights around Niagara Falls during the 1850s. Here the photographer’s focus is on the sitters, versus arranging the people as a counterpoint to the sublime nature of the falls, as is often seen in the photographs of Babbitt. The photograph is set in a Victorian frame. The full plate photograph measures the standard 6 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches.
