Boats and Sea, Stonington (Maine) (1969) by Edward Christiana (1912-1992). Oil on canvas. 36 x 42 inches. Signed and dated lower right and on the verso. Frame made by the artist.

Though Christiana was known as the Painter Laureate of the Mohawk Valley (in central New York State) he painted throughout the US and Canada. This composition was rendered during one of the artist’s several trips to Maine. He graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn in 1933; was inducted into the American Watercolor Society in 1949; and taught at the Munson-Williams-Proctor School of Art beginning in the 1940s. His inspirations included J. C. Leyendecker, N. C. Wyeth, and John Marin. His oil paintings and watercolors are represented in the Currier Gallery of Art (NH), Worcester Art Museum (MA), and Columbus Museum of Art (OH), among other institutions.
