Engraved in the face of the compass is the maker’s information: “Benj. Pike & Sons. 548 [518?] Broadway N.Y.” and “Warranted.” The Pike family operated at this address from 1841-1867. Opposing bubble levels are set at either side of the compass box on the brass plate. Detachable sight vanes set within petitions inside the case.
The box measures approximately 15 1/2 inches by 7 5/8 inches, by 3 inches high, when closed. The compass plate measures approximately 14 3/4 inches, while the diameter of the compass itself is approximately 5 15/16 inches.
