Roswell Morse Shurtleff (1838-1915)

Shurtleff was born in Rindge, NH and died in New York City. In 1881 the artist bought property in Keene Valley, in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State: where, for half of each year, for the remainder of his life, he painted his surroundings, focusing on forest interiors and wildlife compositions, of which this is one. Though unsigned, this painting shares the same palette and stylization that is common in known works by Shurtleff.
