About scott FERRIS
While Scott grew up in an antiques environment – his father with his collection of Civil War memorabilia, and his parents’ antiques shop on the premises – he also began studying art – his parents enrolled his older brother and Scott in painting classes with a local artist when they were 9 and 10 years of age. Fast forward… Scott continued with the studio arts through college: studying painting, drawing, printmaking, etc., here in the States as well as in Europe. However, while studying abroad, his focus turned to art history (what better place to observe firsthand the masterworks that were vaguely present in books and slide presentations?).
Upon Scott’s return from Europe, he continued with studio art though another opportunity arose: the creation of the Rockwell Kent Gallery (and Collection) at the State University of New York-Plattsburgh… and what became his work as a gallery assistant, cataloguing the massive collection of works by Kent. That work led to his employment by the artist’s widow, Sally Kent (by then) Gorton, to administer what she and her now late second husband named, The Rockwell Kent Legacies, housed at the estate.
Since the end of Scott’s tenure at the Kent estate in 1982, he has been engaged in lecturing, writing, consulting, and curating exhibitions on the art and life of the artist: for museums, private collectors, auction houses and galleries. He has also provided a bridge between collectors, many of whom he has known since his days at the Kent estate, or their descendants, and new collectors and institutions who seek artwork by Kent.
