Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790), engraving with facsimile of signature. This image is circa dated 1857-1858, after a late 1700s print.
Inscribed within the print is the caption: “Engraved from an old print by J. A. O’Neill” and “New York: Elias Dexter 562 Broadway.”
J. (John) A. O’Neill (c. 1837-1892) worked in New York City from 1857 to 1858. He served as chief engraver in the U.S. Treasury Department in Washington, DC from 1887 to approximately 1892. Elias Dexter (1816–1897) was a publisher, engraver, photographer, and frame maker; and from 1844 to 1872 he maintained a studio and gallery at 562 Broadway in New York City.
The piece measures approximately 13 by 9 1/2 inches, and the contemporary frame measures 15 by 12 inches. Age tanning and soiling is evident. Images angled to avoid reflections from the glass.
