Silhouette of a gentleman in a landscape by William Henry Brown (1803-1883).
Finely detailed, hand cut silhouette set on a lithograph of a forested landscape overlooking a lakeside community. It measures 13 3/4 by 10 1/8 inches and is signed lower left: “Wm. H. Brown.”
Note on an old mat board that accompanied the piece is the statement: “This silhouette purchased from Helen Dyche estate April 1973. The man is a Dyche but unknown.”
There was a Helen Scripps Dyche (1904-1973) who lived in the Chicago area. Her parents were Frank Berry Dyche (1858-1944) and Grace Locke Scripps (1863-1924). Grace’s parents were John Locke Scripps (1818-1866) and Mary Elizabeth Blanchard (1825-1866). John Locke Scripps was the chief editor of the Chicago (Daily) Tribune; he was named Postmaster General of Chicago, by Lincoln, during the Civil War; and is considered the first biographer of Abraham Lincoln (1860). Brown is known to have traveled to the mid-west so a meeting between the artist and Frank Berry Dyche, or John Locke Scripps, for that matter, is possible. (Framed. Note glass reflection.)
