Civil War era field, snare drum. Label inside drum reads: “Jacob Stewart, Military and Toy Drums, Banjos Tamborines &c., Water Street, Pittsfield, Mass.”
Constructed mid-19th century. Original mustard yellow and red paint on wooden structure. Appears to be original or at least very early roping with all original tightening leathers; with original skin heads––top and bottom (tears to both)––and snares. Pencilled annotations on bottom head faded, not completely legible: the “name” Shepper or Sheffer is one of several words. Since many of the words appear to repeat it is possible that they actually form a cadence that the drummer could then recall and play.
Approximately 10 1/8 inches high by 16 1/2 inches diameter.
